The boys rescue Matthew and Kavinsky dies in a fireball. Ronan reconciles with his father’s spirit, helping him bring to life a night horror to fight Kavinsky’s dragon. The boys meet in Cabeswater where Kavinsky says he knows Ronan, “swings that way,” before dreaming up a gigantic dragon. Meanwhile, the Gray Man confronts his brother and kills him. Ronan deduces Kavinsky plans to create something huge, thereby draining Cabeswater to the point of collapse, and also goes to sleep. Ronan, Gansey, and Blue race to the party in time to see Kavinsky fall asleep.
Kavinsky kidnaps Matthew and stashes him at his Fourth of July party.
He says he will double-cross his employer to protect Ronan. The Gray Man reveals he was responsible for killing Niall and that his employer demands he acquire Ronan to be the object of his experiments, otherwise the Gray Man will be put at the mercy of his sociopathic brother. Later, Blue goes on a romantic drive with Gansey and stops just short of kissing him. Adam and Blue rendezvous at 300 Fox Way where Blue stops him from kissing her, frustrating Adam. The Gray Man deduces the Greywaren is a person - Ronan, then spends the night with Maura.

He teaches Ronan how to steal larger objects from Cabeswater, enabling Ronan to reproduce the Pig. Terrified of Gansey’s reaction, Ronan enlists Kavinsky’s help, who subsequently reveals he is also a dreamer. Ronan races Kavinsky in the Pig and totals it. Adam reappears disorientated on the highway and is diagnosed with Transient Global Amnesia, but he realises his psychic episodes are actually his burgeoning connection with Cabeswater. for a function where Adam argues with Gansey over his deteriorating mental state, and flees. The Gray Man goes on a date with Maura, Blue kisses Noah to reconcile her feelings of loss at not being able to kiss anyone, and Ronan and Matthew are attacked by another night horror. The group searches a lake for Glendower and finds an ancient Welsh shield as well as a hundred-year old Camaro wheel. There, they find dozens of sleeping animals and Ronan’s mother - dream-things that fell dormant when Niall died. Ronan’s nightmares manifest as two night horrors, which he and Gansey kill and bury at the Barns. The group travels to Cabeswater, only to find it has disappeared, devastating Gansey. At church, Declan warns Ronan about being removed from inheriting the Lynch fortune if he misbehaves. Meanwhile, Declan Lynch is attacked in his Aglionby dorm by a hitman called the Gray Man who has been hired to track down the Greywaren. Ronan dreams up a box that can translate any language. Suspiciously, Adam’s rent lets up in time for an increase in fees at Aglionby, and he accuses Gansey of going behind his back. Ronan has opened up about being a dreamer, yet he and Adam are both plagued by nightmares and visions. Meanwhile, some very sinister people are looking for some of the same pieces of the Cabeswater puzzle that Gansey is after. Ronan, for one, is falling more and more deeply into his dreams, and his dreams are intruding more and more into waking life. Now that the ley lines around Cabeswater have been woken, nothing for Ronan, Gansey, Blue and Adam will be the same. Plagues and devils, conquerors and beasts. No one but Ronan knew the terrors that lived in his mind.
